Barratt Homes and the Harlow Gateway Partnership celebrate the launch of Fifth Avenue

Members of Barratt Homes and the Harlow Gateway Partnership recently gathered to mark the launch of Barratt's £100 million Fifth Avenue development at Burnt Mill, Harlow. The new development, a major part of the Harlow Gateway regeneration project, will bring much needed private and affordable new homes to Harlow.

Taking part in a photocall at the new development on 26 January were: Glyn Hopping, managing director of Barratt North London, Richard Burrows, managing director of Barratt Eastern Counties, Bill Rammell MP, Cllr Eddie Johnson, Conservative Harlow Gateway Project Board Member and Steve Collins, English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency.

Barratt installed on site an artificial ice rink as part of the launch celebrations.  Children from Broadfields Primary School enjoyed skating on this, in the company of two clowns, on the 26 January; the rink was then opened to the public on Saturday 27 January.  Around 100 people visited the much anticipated Fifth Avenue development during the launch weekend with many of these being interested buyers; eight properties were sold on the Saturday.

The 27-acre site is superbly located on Fifth Avenue, near the main A414 to Chelmsford, close to the railway station, on the northern edge of the town centre.  The development has outline planning consent for 530 homes, including 159 affordable homes for Swan & Home Housing Associations, that will see the transformation of the former dry ski slope site and sports ground into a highly desirable residential address.  Detailed planning consent for the first phase of 194 properties – a range of one and two bedroom apartments and two, three and four bedroom houses – was granted in September last year.

Bill Rammell MP said: “Once again, I am proud to be celebrating another significant milestone for the Harlow Gateway Project and to be helping to launch a major new housing initiative for Harlow.  The Gateway’s vision has always been about providing desperately needed new homes to rent and buy in Harlow, alongside improved sports, leisure and community facilities.  This is another piece of real progress and it is great news for Harlow.”

Glyn Hopping, managing director of Barratt North London says:  “Barratt has been pleased to work with the Harlow Gateway Partnership to bring private and affordable new homes to the area.  Fifth Avenue will provide a wide choice of properties, with these varying from first-time-buyer homes to large family houses.  A great deal of thought has also gone into the overall design of the development, which incorporates large open spaces and striking landscaping.”

Fifth Avenue will include Barratt’s famous I-Pad apartments; private homes that have been designed specifically for those striving to take the first steps on the property ladder, as well as one and two-bedroom apartments and two, three and four-bedroom houses.

The properties will have varying architectural styles with smart façades including brickwork, buff and white render and timber boarding.  The houses will have private gardens while many apartments, set in landscaped grounds, will have balconies or terraces.

Homes will be built around a major central public space known as The Circus, which will be the location of a public work of art.  Footpaths and cycle routes branch off The Circus like the spokes of a wheel, with mews and courtyards attractively arranged between tree-lined boulevards.

A Harlow Gateway Partnership spokesperson said:  “With new homes in Harlow now available to buy and to rent, we are seeing more exciting opportunities delivered by the Harlow Gateway initiative.  Next, we will see progress on the new community leisure centre and work started to replace the existing facilities with a state-of-the-art centre, better suited to the needs of Harlow.”

Prices for one bedroom apartments start at £172,000, two bedroom houses are priced from £250,000 and three bedroom houses from £265,000.  The Sales Office at Fifth Avenue is open Thursday to Sunday 10am to 6pm, and Monday 2pm to 6pm, telephone 01923 297311.  For information on the affordable homes, please telephone Swan & Home Housing Associations on 01277 844726.
