Energize – a sculpture created by Clare Bigger – is the focal point at the entrance to Harlow Leisurezone

The 6.5 metre, stainless steel model of a woman running has been successfully sited on the mini-roundabout in front of the main entrance to Leisurezone. The sculptor was chosen following a competition created with the help of Harlow Council’s former Arts Officer and Harlow and District Sports Trust board member,  Richard Little from local company Derek Wade Waters. 12 artists who might create work appropriate to the design and function of the building were contacted and initially asked to provide a brief submission setting out their proposals.  From these submissions a shortlist of six was chosen and the sculptors invited to prepare detailed presentations.

A panel comprising representatives from Harlow and District Sports Trust, Derek Wade Waters, Harlow Arts Trust and Saunders Architects - the designers of Leisurezone., chose Clare as the winner. She has considerable experience in producing public art, especially sporting figures.

“We’re delighted with the sculpture conceived and created by Clare,” said Richard. "in addition to creating a stunning icon at the entrance to leisurezone it reflects the wide rang of recreational activities that will take place inside this exciting new building and will add to the exceptional collection of sculpture in the town."

"We are grateful to Harlow Arts Trust and the council for their assistance with the selection and procurement process."
